The annual report of the Murine Department, which has been submitted to Parliament, shows that the cost oi 37 lighthouses for tho year was £9951. The casualties on the coast were 2G steamers, and 3G vessels stranded ; 1 steamer and 3 sailing vessels 5 steamers and 3 sailing vessels in collision. Tho total lives lost were 35. Elsewhere we publish the prospectus of the Theatre Royal Company (limited). The provisional directors should satisfy tho investing public that the company is likely to be a financial suscess. A large number of shares have been already applied for so those who purpose being shareholders should at once send in their applications. Mr Motley is the local broker for the company. People who busy themselves about the religious leanings of politicians have discovered that the Compensation Cabinet is composed of gentlemen of widely differing opinions. It is said there are two Roman Catholics (Messrs Buckley and Tole), one Jew (Sir Julius Vogel), two Freethinkers (Messrs Stout and Ballancc), one Presbyterian (Mr Reynolds), and one Episcopalian (Mr Richardson). Dr. Fisher's appointment as resident surgeon of the Napier Hospital, while a surprise to many here, was as great a surprise to the Inspector-General of Hospitals, Dr. Grabham, who knew nothing of it till yesterday. On Friday last ho wrote a letter to a member of the Hospital Committee asking him to use his influence to get the appointment for an ex-surgeon of the Wellington Hospital. Tho letter was delivered in Napier yesterday, upon which the committeeman wired for an explanation, to which ho got a reply from Dr. Crrabnam last night that he had just learned oi Dr. Fisher having been selected. Tho Darling Downs Gazette (Queensland) of Ist September says:—" Messrs T. G. Robinson and Co. passed another consignment of Now Zealand colts and fillies under the hammer on Saturday, and sold tho whole of them at prices ranging from twonty-fivo to forty-five guineas. An entire colt of grand substance, short of log, but carrying a lengthy pedigree, of pure Clydesdale origin, was, after keen competition, knocked down to Mr Harry Wear, Gtnvrie road, for seventy-eight guineas. This colt will be a very creditable acquisition to the draught stock of the district. Another argument for the Union Company running a steamer to Brisbane, as those hordes arc now shipped to Sydney, and from thence aro forwarded to the interior of Queensland.
The annual mooting , of the Union Rowin"- Club was held last night at tho ProTincial Hotel, Mr S. E. Cooper m the chair. The report was of a satisfactory character. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year :—President Mr T. Watorworth; vice-president, Mr S E. Cooper ; captain, T. H. Giitord ; vico-captain, Mr R. Swecptapplc; secretary and treasurer, Mr S. Speuco; auditors, Messrs S. E. Cooper and J Ross ; committee, Messrs Charlton, Mills, J. Gifford, J F Chicken, J. Ross, J. Langhan, and b. Spence. It was decided that tho club should take part at the opening of the season. MrS. E. Cooper offered trophies to be rowed for during the season. Alter the passing of some accounts the meeting adjourned.
Wednesday's Wairarapa Daily says: — We wonder who supplies our contemporary the Woodville Examiner, with its Wairarapa fictions ? Nothing can bo more absolutely false than the folio wing paragraph " The Wairarapa County Council arc moving m the matter of inducing the Government to open up the land in the Forty-mile Lush for settlement. They have, however, other pbjocts in view, and they would like to get into their own hands the money to bo spent in opening up the roads through the new blocks: This is a very ingenious idea for a body composed for a great part oi men interested in gigantic land speculations. Wo trust the Government will never admit of such a ridiculous idea, and so play into the hands of the Bectham-Buchanan clique, •who have never shown themselves the friends of the genuine settlement."
