It. is authoritatively explained that the reason for despatching Lord WoLseley to Egypt to take supreme command of the troops in that country is that Lieut-General Stephenson the present commander, has declared that the expedition via the Nile will be impracticable. . j The report that the Chinese troops had invaded Tonquin and massacred the French soldiers stationed there is now discredited. August 29. The first issue of shares in tho new Oriental Bank are now being allotted.
Any occupation of the Chinese mainland by the French is considered impossible. September 1. Admiral Courbet has notified the Chinese authorities that he had completed his intended operations atFoochow The French fleet subsequently sailed but their destination is unknown. The whole of the Chinese defence works are in a miserable condition.
