FISHING LICENSES.

[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —Will y° u kindly insert the following in answer to "Octopus"? He states his greatest opposition is from cockles and shell fish, sold by men Avho evade the license. Noav, cockles and mussels are gathered with the hands, so there can be no evasion of the license. lie also says there are men fishing Avithout a license, because there is no' ono to look after them. I presume "Octopus" must bo looking after them himself, so he is the right person to lay the information. I shall be sorry if prevented from gathering cockles, as I intended starting with hot cockles and doughboys next month. lam aware flounders are very scarce, the small ones having been caught; of course some are devoured by larger fish. I have seen a full grown "Octopus" catching lots of flounders in a hole at tho back of tho Western pier, and young "Octopuses" carrying tho small ones up the high-dry-and-bad road, or a bigger fish Avould have grabbed them on the Spit. But uoav our mischievious dredge punts have blocked out the old " Octopus," but only for a time, as I am of opinion the hole will open again when the breakwater is completed. " With an electric light at tho extremity tho old fish will be able to sec without spectacles.—l am, &c, Spectacle Tommy. August 27, 1884.
