FIRES-MAORI GIRL AND ELDERLY LADY BURNED TO DEATH.
Auckland, This day. Mr Vaile, draper, estimates the damage done to his stock by Tuesday night's firo at £7,000. Tho insurances are £4000 in the North British, £1000 in the New Zealand, and £1000 in tho Nonvich Union offices. The building is owned by Mr F. L. Prime, and is insured in the Ncav Zealand office for £700. No further light has been thrown on the origin of the fire. A Maori girl, seven years old, Avas burnt to death at Mangawai in a Avhare. The Maoris buried the remains, but the police will disinter the body, and get tbe coroner to hold an encpiiry into the affair. Nelson, This day.
A five-roomed cottage near Hardy-street was discovereel on firo at 5 o'clock last evening, but tho flames Avcro soon extinguished. It was found that the occupant, an old and Avell-known and esteemed resident, especially in musical circles, Mrs Scaife, senior, Avas burnt to death. Mrs Scaife lived by herself, and was not seen later than 3 o'clock in the afternoon, when a visitor left her cottage. As Mrs kcaife's remains Avere found between the fireplace and tho door of the sitting-room, it is surmised that her dress became ignited by coming in contact with the fire in the grate, and that she endeavored to escape, but fell. The fire then spread to the building.
