MORTALITY FROM CHOLERA IN ITALY.
AUSTRIAN CRUISER FOR PACIFIC
POSTPONEMENT OF POSTAL CON-
FERENCE
THE FRANCO-CHINESE ACTION AT
FOOCHOW
LONDON
August 25. Sixty-three deaths from cholera occurred in Itay yesterday. The Austrian Government will shortly despatch four cruisers round the world to seek for the opening up of trade with the country. One of the vessels will visit Australia and the Pacific. It is reported that tho intended Postal Conference to be held at Lisbon has been postponed until February next owing to the outbreak of tho cholera. Further particulars of the action at Foochow shows that nine French warships disabled eleven Chinese transport vessels in seven minutes. The French refused to accept a surrender, and continued tho shelling for hours. Two Chinese gun boats and the batteries stationed at the arsenal vainly attempted to reply. The French Admiral also bombarded the forts and villages in the neighborhood of Foochow. The Times special correspondent telegraphs pronouncing the whole affair as a sickening massacre. The French loss was six killed. They also had one of their gunboats injured, and a torpedo boat sunk. Yesterday tho French shelled the barracks at Quantor, to which the Chinese offered no resistance. Commenting on the affair the Times says that Admiral Courbet is the idol {sic) of civilised warfare.
