At a meeting of the Hawke's Bay Presbytery yesterday Mr Mackellar was appointed to the Wairoa district.
Major Routledge informs us that Major Butts, the inspecting officer for this district, is expected to arrive here by the last train on the 27th of next month to inspect our local volunteer corps.
At last there appears to be a prospect of a termination to the present political complication. Sir George Grey having failed in the formation of a Cabinet Major Atkinson has been sent for, and, in all probability, as we have all along predicted, a strong Ministry will be formed which will command tho confidence of the House and tho country.
" Jack-before-the-Mast" writes to say that he does not think it altogether fair that Mr Kraeft should be the only recipient of a recognition of bravery in saving Captain Setten's life at the accident to the Pleiades' boat. "Jack" thinks the four brave men Avho pulled the pilot's boat out to the scene are equally worthy of. praise and reward.
Charles Watts, the porter at Farndon railway station, had a narroAv escape from death yesterday. Some trucks were being shunted, and Watts was standing on thjqi brake lever of one of them, when ho slipped and fell to the ground, the wheel caught his left leg, and inflicted a frightful gash on his thigh. He was at once placed in tho train, brought into town, and taken to the Hospital.
The members of the High School Board met yesterday afternoon, the principal business before them being the consideration of the applications for the position of head master of the Boys' High School. Thirtyfive applications had been received, from which eleven were selected after a long consultation over the testimonials. From tho eleven six were selected, and Mr Ormond and the Rev. D. Sidey Avere appointed a committee to decide as to which was tho most suitable.
Only a small number of uninteresting civil cases Avere heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, many of the 9 defendants having confessed judgment prior to the sitting of the Court. Two cases, each partially heard, this morning, Avere to be continued at this afternoon's sitting, viz, Hohaiate Hoata v. Barron, a claini of £44 for detinue of a horse and damages connected Avith such detention—of course a very horsey case. Mr McLean for plaintiff, and Mr Moore for defendant, and a cattle trespass action, Kinross v. Macdonald, claim £3 5s for damages and driving expenses agreed to be j>aid, Mr McLean for plaintiff, and Mr Lascelles for defendant.
Steps are being taken for the establishment of a Salvation Army garrison here, and negotiations are proceeding for the acquisition of either tho Protestant Hall or the Lutheran Church. Both places have been offered to the Salvationists on certain terms which have been submitted to " headquarters" for final approval. It says a good deal for the Army that a commencement Avas made at Auckland Avithout a penny, and that now they have aTlarge building of their own fully paid for. Since the above Avas in type we have learned that terms have been concluded Avith tho proprietors of the Protestant Hall for a period of twelve months. The Army Avill " open fire " on October 1.
The Fisher Grand Opera Bouffe Company open at the Theatre Royal on Saturday next. In noticing their performance of tho "Bride of Abydos," at CbristcVmvch recently, the Canterbury Times said '' The piece was mounted and dressed in a manner superior to anything seen for some time in Christchurch." The Press said the piece '' went Avith much spirit, and tho various songs and dances Avere repeatedly encored. The harlequinade which concludes the performance Avas much enjoyed by the audience, and several neAV tricks Avere introduced. Tho scenery, especially the transformation scene, was loudly applauded." With the present dearth of public amusement the Fisher Company should be Avell patronised.
At 2 a.m. to-day tho house of accommodation at Maraekakaho kept by Mr and Mrs Burgess Avas totally destroyed by fire. There Avere in the house at the time Mr and Mrs Burgess, a ploughman and his Avife ( 7 and the blacksmith. After the rest of the v household _t retired to bed Mrs Burgess remained up doing some ironing, and before going to bed hung the articles up in "iront of the fire, Avhich by that time was almost out. It is supposed that as the fire broke out in that room a spark must have set light to some muslin curtains which were amongst the articles Avhich had been ironed. In no other Avay can the fire be accounted for. The flames spread so rapidly that nothing could be saved. The house, Avhich was a pretty extensive building, and contained a general store, Avas old, and was insured in the National office for £250.
