STROKES OF GOOD FORTUNE.
Some stir has recently been created in Southsea by the astounding strokes of good fortune which have happened to several poor people. In one case a well-known bathing-machine and boat proprietor came in, through the demise of a distant relative, for several thousand pounds;_ another, a young under-nurse in the family of a resident medical man, was left a sum which, Avhen invested, brought her in £300 a year ; a blue jacket on one of the tenders in the harbor received a legacy of £13,000 ; and lastly, a poor IrishAvom an and hivwker of plants, through the death of an out-of-the-way step-aunt, inherits property to the value of £9000, and a like sum in money, besides a-few odd'hundreds in small investments. So truly is she grateful to those who have befriended her, that in the disposition of her riches she has endeavored in some measure to acknowledge their kindness. To a poor Avoman Avho more than twenty years ago took her in when homeless and friendless, she intends giA'ing a small annuity, that " she may never have to do another bit of Avasbing." To a lady who helped her to help herself, she has consigned a crate of valuable china, Avhich she calls " very old and odd-looking." To a little girl of tho family she has promised a handsome present, either in kind or money; and on another sho has bestoAved a curious antique doll's bonnet, made in 1820. To each of her nine children she intends giA'ing £100, to start them in a little business, and £50 to a grandson ; and Avith a portion of the money she proposes to purchase a house, where she, her daughter, ancl son-in-law will live, "doing for themselves, for," sho says, "it don't seem proper for the likes of me, Avho'vo worked hard for my living, to 'aA'e people about mo waiting on me at my ago."—Lady's Pictorial.
