DECLARATION OF POLL FOR HAWKE'S BAY.

Mr Collinge, the returning officer, declared the result of the poll for HaAvke's Bay at ; Hastings at noon to-day. The . numbers were—Russell, 5G4 ; Sutton, 381; .Desmond, 19,0. _ Captain Russell thanked tho electors for having placed him at the head of the poll. Mr Sutton next came forward, and said . that had there been a fair fight it Avould ' have been his pleasure to have occupied the position iioav held by his friend. Through, hoAvever, a peculiar combination of circumystances, and the triangular fight, he had been placed second on the poll. He said he left active political life for a time with the proud satisfaction of having during his " parHamentary career taken an active part Lmostimportantlocalgovernmentmeasiu-es, some of which he claimed the paternity of. Captain Russell would now have probably three years to show whether he Avas a better member for the district, and he felt satisfied that at the end of that time they " would be able to pick more holes in his ''political coat than they had. found in his. Captain Russell had given pledges upon important questions that he would be quite unable to fulfil. The late elections had .ehoAvn' that public men who had sserved .their, country faithfully in the ~ past, although defeated on a former occasion, had been recalled by the voice of r the people, and he felt quite confident that wheii; the next declaration of a poll Avas made for that district he would again " occupy the post of honor. He thought the country was to be congratulated upon the result of the elections, and although he, as one of those Avho actively took part in bringing the dissolution about, had been defeated, he felt certain that the result of the elections had boon a groat gain to the colony. It had resulted in the return of all the prominent, politicians, and there was now a chance of better government than there had been for some time. Ho concluded by moving a vote of, thanks -to the returning officer, for his excellent conduct ot tho election. . , ?
