MR MURDOCH AND MR DESMOND.
[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir,—Allow me to assure Mr Desmond through your columns that I had no intention : to put my question in " an insulting manner," and that if my manner lacked the serene suavity of his it was because I had notsat long enough at his feet to profit by his example. I asked the question about his now celebrated letter because it seemed to mo that a man who could be so silly as to write it was not a fit representative for a,
sane constituency. , I could not help smiling when I found that so simple a question had *' roused the rhinoceros within him." "Th c very head and front'of my offending hath this extent—no more." I trust that this explanation will mollify Mr Desmond s sentiments towards me, but to be on the safe aide I shall insure my life in the "extra hazardous" class before he comes this way again. My dogs (which are not sheep dogs) have informed me that they intend to bring an action for libel against your reporter, as they can prove an alibi.—l am, Sec, H. 11. Murdoch. Hastings, July 7, 1884.
