The 'Only Inducement That Could Stop Him. During tho high water a man was seen going down tho Arkansaw on a log. As he was passing Little Rock several men sprang into a skiff, rodo out to the lone navigator and said : 'Climb in.' 'Climb in whar ?' ' In the skiff : hurry up.' ' Well, strangers, I'm pretty well fixed. Don't take no work movo along.' ' Where are you going ?' ' Down the river,' 'We know that. Where aro you from ?' ' From up the river.' ' Of course you arc ; but—' ' What made you ax, then ?' ' What arc you doing on that log ?' ' Travelling 'What do you want to fool with us for? Don't you know you'll drown if you keep on this way ?' 'Won't drown if I keep on this erway. Ef I was ter git off on the water I mout drown.' ' How far have you come this way ?' ' I've come this way all or long.' ' But where were you when you got on the log?' 'On tho log.' c Of course, but whero was tho log ?' ' In the river.' ' Certainly, but how far from here ?' ' Ain't made no calc'lation.' 'Where do you live when you are at home ?' ' At home.' 'Of course,but whero is your home ?' ? Whar I live.' 'Where is your family P' ' Scattered erlong.' ' Did your house wash away ?' ' Sorter. My wife's back yonder on a cot-ton-wood log, an' my son Bill's com in' along some'ere on a poplar.' ' Why don't you como to the shore?' ' Cause it don't cost nothiu' ter ride.' 'You'd better come out and get a drink of whisky-?' ' Dinged if I don't do it. Feller back hero wanted me to come out and hear him preach, but ho didn't havo tho right kind o' gospel. Now, fellers, pull for the shore as fas' as yer ken.'
