[BY TELEGRAPH". ] Auckland, This day. The City of Sydney arrived from Sydney and sailed yesterday for San Francisco with 110 passengers, among them Mr and Mrs Polk. . When off the Australian coast, during a hurricane, the captain of the barque Glance, from London, put out a canvas bag in the shape of a cone, 18 inches long by 12 inches at. the base, holdingabout two gallons of oil, from the port cathead. The oil oozed gradually from the pores of the canvas. The effect was groat, and during the time the ship lay to she did not ship any water, AVhen running she towed bags, and the crew could perceive.the wonderful effect of the oil in calming the crests of the waves. The bag was filled with kerosene, the other with colza. The colza was much the better, and lasted much longer. The barge Ruakaka, which has arrived from Mongonui, reports that the two men picked up off Great Barrier Island were not two of her crew as supposed, but two deserters from the whaling barque James A. Morgan, lying at Mongonui. The Ruakaka's crew were willing to ventuie on the voyage to Sydney. Wellington, This day.
Capt. Borg, of the cutter Lena, which arrived last night, reports that he passed a quantity of wreckage, at the entrance of Tory Channel, the piece of a mast, evidently tho portion from the deck to tho keel, some 11 to 16 inches in diameter, newly painted red, also side planking painted black, and deck'planking,'all'kauri. Some of the side planking was marked as if for iron flanges, pointing to the probability of the wreckage belonging to a steamer. • The breaks in tho timber were quite new, and from the size of the mast it appeared to belong to a vessel of ; 100 tons. Dunedin, This day. Sailed, Enterprise for Napier.
