dune 10. Earl Granville, Secretary of State for Foieign Affairs, speaking iv the House of Lords last night on the proposed Egyptian Conference, said that negotiations were now proceeding between the British and French Governments on the subject matters for discussion at tho Conference. When these negotiations had terminated, the results arrived at would be submitted to Parliament for approval before being notified. Mr Fisher is about to issue tho prospectus of his Northern Territory Company. Amongst the directors are the Duke of Mancheater and Lord Lytton. The proposal to float the Adelaide Copper Company in London has been postponed for the present. M. Cqurmeaux has returned to France from his special mission to the Australian Colonies and New Caledonia, and his report on the subject of his mission has been forwarded to the French Premier. The French papers, commenting on this report, state that it will probably lead either to the postponement or modification of the Recidivisms Bill. June 12. Arrangements for the approaching conference on Egyptian affairs are rapidly approaching completion. It is reported that the British Government will withdraw their troops from Egypt at an early date, and the Groat Powers represented at the Conference arc unanimous in their request to that effect. Tho Imperial Treasury is opposing the application made by tho Bank of South Australia for an extension of its present charter. The ground of opposition is that the application includes a clause which limits the liability of shareholder*regarding the note issue. June 14. The Solicitor-General for Ireland has given his opinion in favor of the legality of Justice Molesworth's decision on the question of local liquidation in connection with the affairs of the Oriental Bank Corporation, and that the Government of Victoria are entitled to transfer their claim as a charge on the bank assets in Melbourne. June 15. Commenting on the recent complaints by the planters of Fiji against the policy of.
M. Dcs Vteux, Governor of Fiji, the Standard insists that the complaints are well founded, and that the Governor should be recalled. June 16. It is expected that the German Reichstag will reject the vote recently passed by the Federal Council for the payment of an annual subsidy of four million marks for the establishment and maintenance of an efficient line of mail steamers between Germany and tho Australian colonies and the Eastern ports. ■ June 1 1. In tho House of Commons last night Mr Redmond asked a question with reference to the verdicts at several recent kidnapping cases in Queensland. The Hon. Evolyn Ashley, Political Secretary at the Colonial Ofticc, replied that ho stated that the verdicts were of a surprising character, but that it was impossible for the Imperial authorities to interfere.
