It is understood that Mrs Patterson, the landlady of the Fitzroy Hotel, intends to proceed against Mr Newman, the chairman of the City East Licensing Committee, for slander, in having said that young girls are harbored in her house. Wanganui, This day. The Resident Magistrate on Saturday committed James Robert Young, a carpenter living at Riverton, for trial at the next sittings of the District Court for allegtd perjury in an assault case in which he was the defendant. Bail was allowed—himself in £100, and one surety of £100. Wellington, This day. Messrs Buckley, Stafford, and Fitzlicrbert have been retained for the defence in the Grey marriage suit. All the material allegations are denied. Dunedin, This day.
The mate of the Waimate Avas on Saturday charged with a breach of the Diseased Animals Act by letting a dog which came from England unchained. The inspector gave him permission at first, but finding ho had no power to do so, he revoked it, and afterwards found the dog loose. The case was dismissed, as no penalty is fixed under the Act. A case against the master was also dismissed.
