May 19. The Rev. Andrew Douglas, of Arbroath, has refused the appointment under the West Melbourne Presbytery, owing to the inquisitorial nature of the chnrch rules. it is considered probable that the Hon. James Service, Premier, and the Hon. Graham Berry, Colonial Secretary of Victoria, and the Hon. Major Atkinson, Premier of New Zealand, will receive birthday honors of knighthood. May 20. Mr Tawcett, the Postmaster-General,
has decided to send all New Zealand letters by the first mail which leaves for that colony, unless specially addressed. May 21. The Volksraad (Dutch Parliament) has declined to interfere with the Boer occupation of Zululand. Information from the Cape has been received that the rebel Usurus are now threatening Natal. A General Australian Mortgage Agency Co-npany is projected, with a capital of one million, and Earl Denbigh as chairman of directors. ~ n , May 22. The French Government have decided to introduce a proposal in the Senate for doubling the amount of duty now paid on flour. . . Chesson's Society urge that it is desirable British authority over New Guinea should be assented to.
