RACING INTELLIGENCE.
The race meeting that took place at "Waipukurau was well attended. A special Strain that went from Napier was very well patronised. The course was at a rather inconvenient distance, being over two miles from the station. I was informed thafc_ it ■was in splendid order before the rain set in, but on the day of the races it was very heavy going, the whole ground being sodden with -water. Some idea of the state of the course I can be formed by it taking 2 mins. 25 sees, to run the Maiden Plate of 1 mile. Mr Cohen was there with his totalisator, which ■worked satisfactorily, and put through close upon £900. Mr Gaisford worked most energetically, and great credit is due to him for the manner in which the pro- ■*\ fframmo was got through, the races being ' started punctually to time. The first race on the programme was the— HANDIDAP HUEDLE BAOE, : Of 25 SOVB, distance about 2 miles. H. P. Cohen's b g Flying Scud (0. , . Warren), lOsfc 91b' .. .. ..1 \-G. Gilpin's eh g Pastime (E. At the second hurdle Pastime and Scad got over together, the other two faltered, and after a few attempts to gst over were not persevered with leaving the race to Scud and Pastime, ■who'alternately took the lead. At the turn for home it-was seen that Pastime was in trouble, he could riot get along on the heavy ground, and Scud won easily by five or six lengths. £143 in tetalisator, dividend £3 15s. i ! At the back of the course Heretaunga was leading, followed by Orphan Boy and Breeze, Emir Bey a long way in the rear. Coming into the straight the three first named were well together, and a good race took place down the straight. A short distance from home, Heretaunga ran into a man, and the trio came to grief, whereby he lost his chance, and Breeze won a good race by a length from Assegai, who came very fast at the finish. Emir Bey disappointed his friends, as he either could or would not go through the heavy ground. There were £262 in the totalisator, dividend £9 Bs. For the Hack Flat Race fourteen horses started, which was won by Kate Kelly. Mr Cohen did not run the totalisator on this race, as he was unable to get the names of the horses entered. Assegai came up, and good race took place down the straight, Assegai winning by about two lengths, Gannymede beating Incense for second place by a head. Totalisator £166, divi£2 19s.
DISTEICT HANDICAP, Of 50 soys ; distance I.J- miles. C. L. Mackersey's b g Breeze (Barlow), Bst7lbs 1 J. Driscoll's b g Daybreak (Arnold), Bst 101b 2 G. Hunter's eh m Little Fidget (J. Heretaunga took the load tho first time past the post, followed by Breeze, Orphan Boy, and Daybreak. At the back of tho course Heretaunga fell, agitin losing what looked to be a good chance of the race. Coming down the straight Breeze, who had the lead, was coming along full of running, was not to be denied, and won the race pretty easily, with Daybreak second. £166 in totalistor, dividend £2 6s.
Assagai, whose name did not figure on the card, was allowed to run, as it was evidently an oversight on the part of his owner that his acceptance had not been received in time. His name did not figure in the totalisator in the Birthday Handicap, but did in the Corinthian. This horse being allowed to run, and Heretaunga meeting with mishaps, upset my tips.—("Hippo.")
