FIRE.
Auckland, This day. A fire broke out at 6 o'clock last evening at Messrs T. and H. Cooke's furniture factory, Elliott street. The fire started m the mattrass stuffing department on the basement, and was not suppressed till damage to the extent of £1000 had been done. The building is insured in the New Zealand office for £1000, and the stock and machinery for £500 in the Royal. The water poured on the fire flowed into the basement of the firm's Queen street warehouse, where £200 damage was inflicted. Tho Royal had a policy of £2200 on the stock in the warehouse, and the New Zealand of £1250 on the building. The origin of the fire is unknown. The storeman m charge was in tho act of closing up the premises when the fire broke out in the basement.
