DISTRESS IN OTAGO.
On April 29th the Mayor of Dunedin sent tho following to the Premier at Wellington : —"A number of men hero are unable to obtain work. Strongly urge you to open a small section on the Otago Central Railway or other work for the unemployed during the winter months." The following reply has been received :—" Many thanks for telegram re unemployed. The Government are making arrangements to take men on when necessary, but in the public interests they think the necessity must be clearly shown before relief works are opened."
