Major Atkinson's freo and easy entertainment on Thursday night at Dunedin, on the same lines as regarded admission as Moulton's Pain Paint entertainment, Was prolonged till nearly midnight. Tho Albion Lodge of Druids entertained tho members of tho Baron Wolsoloy Lodge, Hastings, at supper last evening at the Caledonian Hotel, Avhen about fifty members sat down to an oxcollont repast. Tho second of tho Saturday evening j entertainments at tho Working Men's Club Avill bo given in the club ball to-night, commencing at 8 o'clock. These entertainments aro becoming very popular, and in doubt Avill be patronised as largely tonight as on former occasions. When pooplo Hue tho streets as thoy did last night in ci-OAvds to Avitncss the torchlight procession, it is just as well Avhen moving to keep their eyes about them. Last night a collision between two ladies resulted in ono of them marching on with a black eye to commemorate tho occasion. Wo understand that it aviis the original intontion of the harbor scheme Commissioners, Messrs Austin, Scott, and Goodall, to arrivo here on tho 3rd of May, but as Mr Goodall cannot now get away from Timaru ns early as ho expected, it is not likely that the commissioners Avill roach hero much before the middle of next month. v Tho Wellington Times says:—"Ono of the richest men in tho Avorld, Mr Singer, of the well-knoAvn American sewing machine firm, Avas a passenger from Wellington by the steamer Wairarapa on Saturday for Auckland." Very pretty, only Mr Singer's name is not in the Wellington Timcs's passenger list, and Mr Singer has been dead somo years. Au accident occurred to Gibbio's Puketapu coach this morning when coining into town. Not far from tho Waverley Hotel, in order to pass a dray, tho coach aviis drawn toAvards tho edge of tho road, but going too closo to fhc ditch, and having a heavy top load on tho roof, it overbalanced. Fortunately tho passengers escaped Avith nothing worso than a few slight cuts and Home bruises. Tho Tomoana freezing Avorks, apart from tho important industry to which thoy belong havo proved a real blessing to many a suif'cring invalid, no application for ice, so needful in eases of hemorrhage, being refused. I'esterday by tho 3 p.m. train tho gift of some ieo was asked on behalf of a sick person, and by the return train a package Avas forwarded to >-■ town. Wo are requested to return thanks to Messrs Nelson Bros, and company for their kindness. Mr 11. 0. Caulton has been making some great improvements at the Pacific Hotel, Hustings. The building has been raised

eighteen inches, tho passages widened, and the dining-room nearly doubled in size. The sanitary arrangements have also been well looked after, a complete system of drainage having been carried out. Freshly painted and papered, tho Pacific is now ono of the leading hotels in the country, and can offer excellent accommodation to visitors to that rising township of Hastings.

As a mob of horses belonging to Mr McDonald, which wore being driven to Hastings from the Wairarapa, wero on the road between tho racecourse and the railway line, they took fright at the 10 o'clock train, and galloped in a frantic manner up the road. One of them ran against a shaft of a dray belonging to the Longlands estate, with such force that tho leaders ot tho dray wero thrown on their sides, and tho shaft penetrated the mare's chest to the depth of about eisrhtcen inches. Mr Uanvcrs was sent for and sewed up tho wound, but fears the case is hopeless.

The Hawke's Bay Goldmining and Prospecting Company will commence operations next week. A. meeting of directors takes i)lace on Monday, and three men will be cl.-*pii tolled to tho jfrouud to tc*t tho roof. Somo eighteen months ago Mr J. Lyon forwarded from his Wakarara country some specimens of stone to Dr. Skcy, the Government Analyst, and roceived a report as to its quality." Dr. Skcy reported that, though the stone" was of gold-bearing character, it contained no trace itself of tho precious metal. Mr McLeod's specimens, that came from the .same district, aro stated by tho discoverers to contain gold. The pioneer company havo the best wishes of the public.

The Maori children in tho Waikaremoana district arc very busy just now capturing small birds. In this pursuit thoy aro very ingenious, and equally cruel. Tho small blight-bird is in season. The children capture half-a-dozen of these birds alive, and string them by their nostrils to a short stick. Tho stick is slung horizontally from a handy bough, and the boys aro hiding close by. The stick is then shaken, and the poor littlo birds in exquisite torture flutter their wings and endeavor to grasp the stick to ease the weight of their bodies from their nostrils. To the birds looking on, the movements of tho captives appear as if they were enjoying an excellent feast of blight, aud so scores of victims alight on the stick and are at onco struck down by the boys. Iv this way kits full of these useful birds arc destroyed.

A meeting of tho Hastings Town Board took placo yesterday afternoon, when a letter from the "chairman of tho H.B. County Council was read, which stated that tho Council agreed to hand over to tho Town Board the power of levying rates in tho town district on condition that the Board maintained roads aud drains. It was agreed that the chairmin should interview the chairman of tho County Council for the purpose of adjusting tho valuation of those properties divided' by tho town district boundaries on the same basis as that agreed to by the Hcrctaunga Road Board. The clerk was instructed to writo to tho Pro-perty-tax Commissioner urging the necessity of the department furnishing as soon as possible the valuation roll for the town district. The chairman aviis requested to call tho attention of the Minister of Public Works to the fact that tho footway to the railway station had not yet been constructed. The consideration of the by-laws was deferred to tho 9th May.

Torchlight processions aro getting frequent occurrences in Najncr, and each succeeding one seems to surpass its predecessor, but it may be fairly said of last night's " show "" that it aviis far and away the best Aye have yet had, and had there only been a few more lights to show off the procession to its greatest advantage it would havo been still bettor. As usual tho Garrison Band headed tho march —wo Avonder what Napier would do Avithoi.it that band, which seems ever ready to tako part in any and every entertainment ? Thero Avero several cars gaily decorated Avith flags, evergreens, and gilded neatly, and in tho earn rode a number of living representatives of historical and my thical personages. The figures, including Britannia, Bene\ r olencc, Caractacus, Justice, a Gladiator, kc The Druids, dressed in long Avhite hoods and togas, and wearing long beards und headed by the A.D., marched in procession through tho principal streets, and it seemed as if all the world aud his Avifc were iv the streets to Avitncss the spectacle, wliich was a very good one indeed, the march terminating at tho theatro.

Tho Napier Amateur Dramatic Club gave a performance last night in the Theatro Royal before a crowded audience. The Druids' 'War Song from Norma, given by members of the local and Hastings lodges of Druids artistically grouped on the stage, as a spectacle Avas pleasing, but the audience had done nothing to justfy such a melancholy infliction on them as the song proved. The farce of " Only a Halfpenny" followed, Avhiclnvont very smoothly, though here and there Mr Jones Avas inclined to go beyond the limits of even a farce. The lady who played Bridget, must be complimented on the manner in Avhich sho enacted tho part of a servant. " O'Callaghan on his Last Legs" Avas tho concluding piece, and our only regret is that tho entertainment had not commenced with this diverting comedy. The gentleman who played O'Callaghan gave a clever representation of one of the most difficult characters to properly piny known to the stage, and of last night's representation avc can honestly say the performance aviis far and away abovo the run of ordinary amateurs, every point was carefully made, his business was perfect, ho dressed the part properly, and in a piece Avhero it is so easy to exaggerate he aviis careful not to overstep the line. But ouo fault could be found with the representation, and for that nature and not the actor aviis to blame, the brogue Avas not racy of tho soil, it lacked the rich melloAVness of an educated Irish gentleman, and thereby tho humor lacked spontaneity. Charles was Avell played, though in some degreo lacking repose, whilo of tho other male characters the less said tho better. The ladies avlio took part in the entertainment, generally tho weak point in amateur performances, Avere far more capable than the gentlemen. For closo confinement, want of air, sedentary habits and brain and nerve tiro, trust in Hop Bitters. Read. Tho efficacy of Wolfe's Schnapps has been spoken and Avritton of, but it is in the individual cures consummated it finds its highest award and surest advocacy. It is palatable, stimulative, and produces marked results.—[Advt.]
