MINISTERIAL STATEMENT REGARDING SAFETY OF GENERAL GORDON. FRENCH CLAIMS IN REFERENCE TO CONTROL OF EGYPT. SUICIDE OF DEGRADED CHINESE OFFICIAL. (Received April 25, 9.55 p.m.) LONDON. April 24. The Right Hon. H. C. E. Childors, Chancellor of tho Exchequer, delivered his budget statement in tho House of Commons this evening. Tho estimated revenue for tho ensning financial year, is set down at £85,500,000, and the expenditure at £85,250,000. It was proposed to continue the reduction of the national debt, and £8,000,000 would bo paid off during the year. In order to meet tho deficiency arising from tho re-coinage of worn and light coin, it aviis proposed to issuo gold ten-shilling pieces containing only nine-tenths of the quantity of gold contained in the present half - soveriegns. The speech also announced that it was intended to issue stock bearing interest at the rate of 2f per cent., AThich Avould be offered to holders of all 3 per cent consols. No increase of taxation Avas announced. In the House of Commons to-night the Premier made a statement regarding the situation of affairs in tho Soudan. Both tho country and the Government, Mr Gladstone said, recognised that they avoi-g under an obligation to secure tho future safety of General Gordon, and Ministers Avere fully prepared to fulfil that obligation should occasion require it.
