THE OPERA.
:, Tho; Theatre Royivl was "again well attended l<ist evening- to witness the hist ■ 'representation of " Olivette," which, as on : ; '"th'b previous night, wentsmoothly from '. : etartrto'finish,' iri'fact the ' productions of "this'clever company do hot admit of a hitch anywhere, tho drilling and organisation all ,J being far too good" £5 have laches hi their performances.' 'Miss Nellie Stewart '} was again hi'capital voice,' aud .sang and • ,acted throughout with grgat spirit. Miss »Liddiard/as usuaf, i)lea'sed her audience, while Messrs' Woodfiold and Vernon both 1 'g'avb'capital renderings of the music allotted to them, Ml , ' VL'riioii being in grand! form. ..The','drolleries of Messrs Kelly and Wallnee " ' were as'am'lKjing:■«« over,''and the scones in tho eccpndlac'tj in' which they appeared"^as , ■ well asi Mr WcJo'clfield, 'were'productive of ,' much inivth (md laughter. A word of '..' ."praise i* due to , . Miss Maggie Stewart for ' tho manner in Winch she fuls a small part, '' in'wliich she mftkes the most" of licii , , limited opportunities. ■ '■ '' To-n'iglit the ! favoritc opera " Los Cloches do Cornoville " will bo produced. This has ever been a favorite in New Zealand, but y<3 yerituro to say that its production towill'surpas's any otlitir production of 'the piece that him over been suen in the colony. In saying that wo are making no rash assertion.' The piece, when first pro-
ducedin Australia, went very flat, but since then-when properly mounted and the leading parts filled by capable Yocalwts-fnero has been no more favorite opera. We have seen many Serpolettes, biit with the exception of one lady, who has never app' • red in New Zealand, Miss Nellie Stewart is, so to speak, head and shoulders over all those who have essayed the character in this colony. She is .a finished vocalist 'and a clover because natural actress, and the model from which her view of tho character is derived, combined with her own excellent taste and utter absence of artificialitj', has resulted in her giving a representation snen as we havo never, seen in New; Zealand, and those who attend the theatre this evening, "*when the performance ,is : oven will bear us out in what wo have said The cast, besides including the' .usual favorites, contains the name of that very capable artist, Mr John Forde : who will fill the BaiUie's part. We predict a bumper house, and our only regret is that there aro but two more nights ot this talented company.
