ASSUMPTION AND INTEMPERANCE.

FTo the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir,—Poor " Pro Bono Publico," is ho in his right mind? Judging from his incoherent ravings one is inclined to think he is not, and thus one can excuse him for most of his rambling statements. In my last I pointed out tho inconsistency of his arguments, and the dilemma in which he had placed himself. He now attempts to wriggle away from his inconsistencies by arrogant assumptions, thus showing he is incapable of argument. In the first place he assumes on the signature "True Methodist," and endeavours to occupy as much space in your columns as he possibly can by drawing upon his imagination. After all, the signature was a misprint. Ho says that I "quite forgot that the most earnest advocates of temperance are not Christians." Where in my communication do I infer anything _of the sort. Poor fellow, he is again carried away by his vanity to supposition. He essays to give my definition of the term Christian, but it is his own spurious imagery that ho is indulging in. He asserts that I am "under the belief that the whole world is travelling and groaning in drunkenness." How can I bo under such nn impression in face of the news wo have from Auckland, that tho temperance parties were victorious. "The proportion of intemperance to sobriety" which he calls "trifling in the extreme " is quite sufficient to cause cveiy eifort to bo put forth for its suppression.—l am, &c, Free Methodist. Napier, March 8, 1884.
