LICENSING COMMITTEES ELECTION.

The polling for the three Napier licensing districts took pla ceyesterday, amid agood deal. of excitement. Both the temperance and tho licensed victuallers parties did their utmost to secure a victory, though the organisation of the latter was superior, strango to say, to their opponents. The election was conducted in a thoroughly friendly spirit, though no efforts were spared on either side to secure victory. Humor was not altogether absent on the occasion, the Blue Ribbonmen having as opponents men who donned bits of red. During the day ono cab was conspicuous -by carrying a large -flag.of the United States,, while.the-cab wai j gaily painted with the liot altogether inappropriate motto (on both sides) "Shandy Gaff v. ColdT.'' During thedayacartoon was issued, which, if not so pronounced as the cab sign, wasstill highly humorous. Two I all-blue horses were seen on a racecourse with their jockeys all in blue, both s hard at the whip and straining every nerve to roach tho post, whilo a good way in front was an allred horso with an all-red jockey sitting perfectly still, winning easily. Of cohrse the temperance party were under a decided disadvantage inhaving to vote 'for five men, but a very slight glance at the returns, bearing in mind that' they "tabooed" two candidates, will indicate the respective : strength of the two parties. ■• If we take the North Ward we find Mr Laws had 56 votes (which assuredly did represent the'strength of the temperance vote),'while Mr Price (whom the teetotallers did their utmost to •keep out) received ; 102- votes, and those 'votes ; fairly' represent rKe -strengrfc"— of parties. ; It was ; nearly 8;30 bei fore tho returning officer declared tho result. The names of the successful can - i didates were received with loud cheers by a ; crowd of several hundred people, - while, i when the votes recorded for the unsuocess- - ful were' announced,' they » wore > received • with groans and cheers for "shandygaff," which was apparently very popular* jesteri day, Tbe following aro the resulti of tho l polling, Messrs Ormond, Locke, Coleman, Spencer, and Price being elected:— N.
