A PROFITABLE ERROR.

The Rev. Dr. William Taylor was minister of the Cathedral Church and Principal of the University of Glasgow, from 1803 to 1823. Every Thursday ho devoted to jjulpit preparations, aud one week on that day a message was brought to the effect that the Duke of P-uccleuoh and Lord Belhaven wished to see him at their hotel. His manservant was reluctant to disturb him, but finally took in the message, and the Principal proceeded to wait on the twu noblemen. On his entrance the Duke Buid — "I have sent for you to take my measure for a pair of trousers. My own have met with an accident, and I hope you can furnish mo with a new pair by to-morrow morning." " My name is Taylor," replied the doctor, " but I am not professionally a maker of garments, but Principal of the University, and one of the city clergy." " How awkward!" exclaimed the Duke, " I sent for tho principal tailor, and my blundering messenger has put you to the trouble of this visit. T hope, Principal, you will join its at dinner, and if I can do anything to compensate you for the loss of your valuable lime, I'll not bo wanting." Before Dr. Taylor left, ho rccoived a cheque for £.3000 for tho city infirmary, which was at that time deeply in debt.
