DEATH OF A GREAT SURGEON.
Dr. J. Marion Sims, who was to America what Sir James Simpson was to Scotland, has died at Now York in his 70th year. Ho was almost as well known in Europe as in his natice country. To have been a pupil of his in Paris or New York, tohavo learned his method of operating in delicate and difficult cases, was a passport to success in tho surgical profession. His practice lay in many of tho capitals of Europe, and his services had boon called into requisition in nearly every Court on the Continent. His European practice alone yielded him easily an income of not less than £10,000 a year, and at tho same time he was making a still larger sum in New York. In 18G4 the French Government conferred on him the Order of Knight of the Legion of Honor. Like our own Simpson, his benevolence was equal to his skill. He dispensed his services as freely to tho poor as to the rich, and the blessings of many ready to perish were on his head. The other day he was about to sail for Europe when he was prevailed upon to remain and perform an exceedingly delicate operation on which the life of a patient depended. It was successful, and the life was saved ; but at the cost of hia own. He returned to his home and died the same night. Dr. Marion Sims was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church.
