SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
The annual meeting of Napier houso- ' holders to elect a committee for the ensuing 1 year. Thero was a crowded attendance, Mr 1 Dobson occupying tho chair. A long report on the school for the last year was read, from which it appeared that tlie total number of scholars on the roll is 735, and tho average attendance 577. The revenue for the year had been £373 Ms 3d, and the expenditure £371 8s 4d. The olectiou.of committee resulted as Sidey, 242 ; J. Parker, 229; F. W. Garner, 182; T. Laws, 159; W. L. White, 156; G. Scarfe, 109 ; W. A. Shanlv, 96 ; H. Williams, 93 ; B. V. Harding,,' 79"; M. D. Spriggs, 76 ; J. S. Large, 71 ; A. W. L. Cotterill, 54 ; ._. J. Davidson, 36 ;P. Glenn, 33. The seven were declared duly committee afterwards mot, Mr Laws chairman. Mr Hodgson was also re-eloctod secretary. It was resolved to meet in future on. the second and fourth Tuesdays. Messrs Scarfe and White were appointed a visiting committee for January. The committee, before adjourning, decided to collectively visit the schools to-day. ■ The householders of Port Ahuriri met in the Spit school-room and elected the following committee:— Messrs- W. Riddell, T. McCarthy, F.E. Saunders.D. Cotton, C. Wilson, M. Rolls, andC.Cranby. The Mew committee afterwards appointed the officebearers:—Mr -McCarthy, Chairman; MrF. E. Saunders,Secretary; MrW. Riddell, Treasurer. The Rev. D. Sidey and Mr R. Hardinsr were nominated for the vacant seats on the Education Board. It was resolved to 2>roceed with tho erection of a gymnasium. . The annual election of the Petane School Committee took place in the, school-room last evening. The following' R-entlemeri wero present —Messrs Steven, McKonzie, Twigg, C. Villers, Torr, Bee; Gimblet, Richardson, and Tuxford.- Mr McKcnzio was voted to tho chair. • Mr Hamilton read the annual report, which was adopted. A vote of thanks was recorded by, the outgoing committee and to Mr William Villers for his generosity and kindness in giving the annual'treat and day of outing to the children of Petane.' • Several now Hues wore read by Mr Hamilton for the bettor government of the school, and they wero allowed to stand over for the consideration of tho new committee.' The school accounts worth en gone into, and they showed a satisfactory credit balance The meeting proceeded to nominate and ballot for a committee for the ensuing-year. The following wore elected: —Messrs McKenzic, Twigg, Tuxford, Steven, Spencer, gimblet, and Major, Rjchardscl)}; The nexy unanimously elected Mr Fi Steven chairs man for the' ensuing year.' Mr Ny.Villers was agar'n thanked by the • new committee for his liberality to the children of thej valley.- Votes of were passed to the/ late chairman, Mr Steven (who is 1 again elected), 'Mr Hamilton, and the old committee for the attention paid to'theil' several offices during the past year. A large number of the householders in the Meanee district mot in tho school-room last night to elect a School Coommitteo for the ensuing year. Mr G. A. McDonald, tho secretary and chairman, gave a full re- -- —--nort of the school for the past year, and sii-initted a balance-sheet to the meeting, which sii. tt'S'l that about £40 had been raised in the district over and above tho grants from the Napier Education Pro-el. ihe liberality of the residents, and thcWceasful concerts given, have enabled the committee to clear the cost of the following, namely, addition to teacher s house, a Garton and King's stove, erection of swings for scholars, metalling playground, and purchase of forty new books for the library The balance-sheet showed that evcry'item of debt had been wiped off, and a very small balance remained. The roport and balance sheet were accepted, and the committee wero accorded a hearty vote of thanks for tho satisfactory termination of their year's work, Mr McDonald receiving a special measure of praise for his indofatigablo efforts aud cheerfully rendered services as secretary and chairman. The election of the new committee for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, aud resulted in tho return of the following mem- . . bers:— Messrs G. A. McDonald, W. Fairbrother, J.;Burtori, J. Gloyn, James Wilson, Israel Trask, and George "Simons. At the first meeting of the newly-elected committee Mr McDonald was re-appointed to the offices of secretary and chairman. The election of tho Taradale elistriet school commitfee took place last evening. There were about eighty householders present, Mr Waterhouse was voted to the chair.' Mr Gilbord read the outgoing cfomimitteo's animal report, which, after some' discussion, was adopted. Seventeen nominii - tions were mado for the new committee, n.. of ft'hom (Mr Neagle) withdrew. Tlie voting resulted in'tho appointment of the following gentlemen, viz :—Messrs Galbraith, Snell, Dolbel, Spence, Orr, Napier, and Harpham, jun. At the-close of the . general, meeting the newly-elected committee met and appointed Mr John Orr . chairman,, and Mr Napier secretary. ■A largo number of resident householders , attended tho meeting at Clive last night for the election of a School Committee. Mr Sutton was yoted to tho chair. The outgoing committee reported that they had been unable, with careful management, to ..make the accounts .balance, thero now being a debit of about £12, which, howover, is £5 leas than last year. The report referred in complimentary terms to the new muster, Mr Bissell, and tho mistress, Miss Ward, and to the encouraging fact that tho school is on tho, increase, 180 children having been present at the opening yester- "■ day; The committee's roport was adopted, and a hearty vote of thanks passed to the retiring committee, The election of committee for the year brought twelve nomi- | nations, from whom Messrs F. Sutton,-A. j Lascelles, G., Pritchard, G. Mcrritt, C. H. . Alley, A. Weaver, and W. Kittow wero . elected. It is proposed to clear off the debt now owing and give the committee a •; chance of doing their work without the constant worry of hard times. The com- \ mittee met afterwards, and appointed Mr , Sutton chairman. The meeting was the largest ; ever held in Clive, and the great ; interest taken is very encouraging. A meeting took place in the Hastings ; school-house ; last nhrht for the purpose of j electing a School Comrnitteo. Mr Dan vers ( proposed that the former committee be re- j elected, and this was seconded by Mr .Cur tiss , and carried. Tho committee then met and , nominated Messrs Tanner and Harding for . the Education Board. j Last night tho residents of Waipawa , elected the following School Committee :— Messrs F. Shanly, D. Guy, E. Harwood, '. J. 0. Ecoles, E. Bibby, M. Collett, and A. ' Robb. The committee afterwards elected Mr Bibby, chairman, and Mr Guy secretary and treasurer. The committee will meet the first Wednesday in each month. At the Wairoa district School Committee election last night the Revs. Messrs Lambert, Riddle, and Penty, and Messrs. G. Flint, Largo, Poole, and Hogan wore elected.' Mr G. Flint was chosen chairman. Little or no interest was taken in the proceedings, only four persons being present when the: meeting commenced, and only two ex-committee men.' There was not even a vote of thanks passed to thoretiing committee. The soonor tho Act is altered the bettor, so. as to provide for the provision of nomination of candidates. —(By telegraph, own correspondent). The Frasertown householders elected Mrs Nairn, Messrs Tunks (chairman), Thatcher (secretary), Steed, Taylor, McMurray, and Brown as the School Committee.
