FIRES.—NINE BUILDINGS DESTROYED.

Auckland, This day.

A destructive lire broke out in Mount Eden-road at 9 o'clock last night near the scene of the late fire. It commenced at the shop of Mr James, grocer. Owing to the defective water supply the fire was only arrested after the destruction of five residences and three shops. The following are the insurances as far as obtainable:—Mr James' shop, owned by Mr Pillenger, £300 in the Fire Association of London ; Mr Pillengor's residence, £200 in tho same office; Mrs Pur die's dwelling, believed to be £200 in tho New Zealand office ; Mr Gladding, senr's, grocer's shop, stock £250 in the Colonial, and house £100 in the same office ;'Mr H.F. Gladding', (bootmaker) house, £150 in the Colonial and £100 in the Union ;Mr Hatfield's house, £200 in tho South British and £100 on furniture in the same office ;' Mr Adams, uninsured ; Mr Larkin's (contractor), £550 in the Royal and £250 in the Union on house and furnituro ; Mr Short's draper's shop, damaged only, insured in the Colonial for £200, aud in the National also, it is said, but the amount is unknown. The fire arose through a tenant named Jones placing a pudding in a pot on the fire, and going to bed. It is supposed that some of the fire fell on the wooden floor.

The residence of Mr Victor Lonquet, Mount Albert, was burned down yesterday morning, It was insured for £250 in the Colonial office.
