DEPUTATION TO GOVERNMENT ON RAILWAY MATTERS.
Wellington, This day.
A deputation representing the Manawatu County Council waited on the Premier and the Minister for Public Works to urge the necessity of placing a sum on tho estimates next session for a railway through the Manawatu Gorge, and extending from Woodvillc to Foxton the Taranaki line. The deputation earnestly pressed upon the attention of tho Government the desirableness of pushing on this important work aa speedily as possible. Both Ministers received the proposal very favorably. The Minister for Public Works expressed a strong conviction of the importance of the work and f idly recognised the necessity of the Gorge line as an essential link in the trunk railway system of the North Island. Mr MitcheLson intimated that the railway ought to be constructed without delay, and promised that a vote for the purpose would be placed on the pnblic works estimates next session, and that the Engineer-in-Chief would be instructed to put in hand the needtul surveys, &c, forthwith. Tho Premier concurred. The deputation _ expressed their satisfaction with the Ministerial assurances.
