The impress uttered a cry of horror, for tho child's destruction seemed inevitable -tho trampling to death by a thousand iron hoofs. Diicctly under the horses was tho little ono—another instant niu.it seal its doom, whoii a stalwart hussar, who was in tho front line, without .slackening his speed or loosening his hold, threw h in self ovar f'e hole's neck, seized and lif ed tho i-hild, and pLced heriu safety upon the saddle bow ; ami this he did without, changing his pace or breaking tho correct iilitnitnuiit of Iho squadron. Two women tliure could only sob forth their gratitude in brukon w-ciuts— the mother of tho child and tho Empress. And a proud and happy moment must it havo bceiHor thehussar when Ins Emperor, taking from his own l>iva-.t tho richly enamelled Cross of thu order of Maria Theresa, hung it upon the breast of his bravo and gallant trooper.
