Great sensation has been caused both in St. Petersburg and Moscow by tho suicide of one of the' Russian Imperial chamberlains. The real motive for the deed has not been allowed to be published, the Russian journals attributing it to mental alienation caused by a serious and painful illness. Tho facts, however, aro those. For some time past the Emperor and have frequently found in their rooms copies of Nihilist proclamations, and the strictest inquiries fniled to discover who introduced them. One dny recently, tho Czarina, on going to her study, was much surprised to see the chamberlain in question standing in a suspicious attitude before her writingtable. Shn questioned him, and he, taken by surprise, drew from his pocket a Nihilist proclamation, which he was about to place on tho tablp. Her Majesty did not lose her presence of mind, but gave orders for him to be searched, whr-n upon him where found a, number of similar documents. She commanded him at once- to quit her presence, and the unhappy mini went straight to his own room and there shot himself dead. Every pains were taken oy the authorities to keep the true cause of the suicide secret, and, so far as the Russian papers were concerned, with success.
