THE LORD MAYOR OF LONDON.

Tho Chri.itchtireh Press, in an article on tho recent election of n Lord Mayor of London, says : —Alderman Fowler is, perhaps, the most highly qualified man who ever held that important ofh'ec. ]to is a wealthy banker and a man of great influence in the city; but he is, besides, an accomplished •scholar, a Master of Arts of London—one of the proudest of all Univer.-ifcy degrees— •where he took high honours in both classics and mathematics ; an author of considerable merit, a country gentleman of good standing, a politician of no mean reputation, and an ornament to a refined and intellectual society. He sat in Parliament for Penryhn and Falmoiitli for live years, and he has been one of tho three Conservative members for London since IBSO, when he received 10,271 votes. It stands to reason that the election of such a man as this to the office of Lord Mayor will place it ou an entirely new footing, and completely take the edge off that satire which from time immemorial has been directed against tho vulgarity, ignorance, and obstructivcncHs of the City Government. This is what the Court of Aldermen appear to have had in view when they braved the wrath of the guilds by rejecting Alderman Hadloy in favour of Alderman Fowler; and so far undoubtedly their action was wise and commendable.
