This ivas accused's third appearance before the Court within a week. lie owned to the soft impeachment. Ho ivas also charged with making use of abusive language, AA'hich ho denied. The evidence of Constables Forstcr and LaAvrcnson having been taken, His Worship asked. " Can you slioav any cause why you should not be convicted?" Prisoner, " I don't sec any cause at all." For the first offence a lino of £ land costs, or seven days'imprisonment with hard labor, and in the second caso a fine of £3 and costs, or 14 clays hard labor, were imposed Andrew Anthony, when asked to plead to tho charge, said ho could not say ho Avas drunk. Constable Weathered said accused Avas very drunk, and three or four parties complained of his conduct, as he was accosting every woman he met. Fined £1 and costs, or four days with hard labor. ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. Anthony Nicholson Avas charged as above, and pleaded guilty. Constable AVeatheied said he found accused in the yard of tho Criterion Hotel with a goose in his arms. Sergeant Burtenshaw said there had been many petty robberies of late, though he knew v.i ...:..g against the accused Ayorse than getting drunk. Sentenced to imprisonment for one calendar month with- hard labor. lunacy. F. Johanson, who had been brought denvn from AVaipawa, Avhere he was unable to bo brought before the Court yesterday, being too iii—three of his fingers having been chopped off by himself—was remanded to the Napier Hospital for treatment. ASSAULT. Thomas Boyd was charged Avith assaulting Robert Martin ou tho sth December. Mr Lascelles appeared for informant, and Mr Doives for defendant. All witnesses Avere ordered out of Court. This Avas simply a fishermen's squabble, and it seemed as if half the foreign population of the Spit was interested in" the case. The evidence Avas very voluminous, the ono side asserting that tho defendant had taken Martin by tho neck and threatened to rip his crimson inAvards ontAVtirds, the other side saying the knife with Avhich ho had rushed at tho informant to carry out the vermillion transaction Avas in his hand because it was a fisherman's custom to fill his pipe Avhonevcr he had a spare minute, and accused had tho necessary "fig" undergoing the cutting process in his hand. His AVorship found the assault proved, and fined the defendant ss, costs 9s, Avitnesscs' expenses 9s, and solicitors' fee £1 Is. ABUSIVE I.ANCIUAOK. Thomas Boyd pleaded guilty to using abusive language to Ernest Michan. Mr Lascelles appeared for informant, and Mr Dewes for defendant. The language made use of by accused was totally unfit for publication, its choiceness only being exceeded by its voluminoiisness. Fined £1, costs lis, Avitnesscs' expenses £1 4s, and solicitors' fee £1 Is, in default, 14 days in Napier gaol.
