Pohokura is also fortunate on the dam s side, for Young Plover, the sire of Pohokura's dam, was not only a first-class racehorse, but was most successful at the stud, as all his progeny were clippers under heavy weights—be the distance six furlongs or three miles. Pohokura's dam was half-sister to that grand marc Deception, the best mare that over trod the New Zealand turf—she ran fifth in the Champion Race in Sydney, in 18G0, in a large field, three days after landing from New Zealand, Villette (dam of Pohokura) raced with great success as a three-year-old, but was early put to the stud, and became the dam of several well-known winners. Pohokura promised to bo a great j>erformer, both on the flat and over fences, but his racing career was unfortunately cut short by an accident which, though it deprives the turf of what bid fair to be one of the grandest performers in the colony, will prove a boon to breeders desirous of producing racers, steeplechasers, or excellent weight-carrying hacks. He is a beautiful dark-brown (almost black) with black points, 8 years, stands 15 hands 3£ inches high, his whole contour being handsome, powerful, and racing-like, and in his- veins runs blood of the most patrician quality, tracing back to the grand Touchstone fountain, whose deserved praise we should never cease to sing. "Touchstone—the renowned "founder of a line of kings"—who was directly descended on both sides by Eclipse —through Whalebone, Waxy, and Pot-8-os on the side of his sire (Camel), and through Master Henry, Orville, Beningbrough, and King Fergus on the side of his dam (Banter), thus tracing back in direct lines to both the Darley and Godolphin Barbs. All competent judges declare him the most useful and best sire that has over been in the Province. Breeders should never forget the fact that all this strain are noted for their good temper, general soundness, and hardy constitutions. He is admirably adapted for getting weight carriers, coach horses, as well as l'acchorses, as he surpasses everything yet seen in New j Zealand for size and strength, combined with the best blood that ever flowed in a horse's veins. Coupled with the above Danebury, sire of Templcton, has been a great performer on the turf, having beaten the best horses which New Zealand could then produce.
