ROWING IN AMERICA.
Tho London Sportsman publishes tho following telegram from its correspondent at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, dated September The groat regatta has just been concluded, and it has unfortunately been marked by a most deplorable incident. Chief among the events was a single-scull race for professionals, which was rowed in heats, and for which handsome prizes were offered. There was an immense attendance of spectators, and the excitement was intense. In tho fourth heat for professional sculls George 11. Hosmer was a competitor, and ho was made a warm favorite in tho betting. AVilliam Elliott, ex-champion of England, also took part. Shortly after the race started Elliott rowed over and deliberately fouled Hosmer. A tremendous hubbub ensiied,_,.nd hundreds of the onlookers did not hesitate to loudly assert that Elliott had been bribed by tho gambling fraternity to act as ho did. The umpire immediately declared tho heat void, and ordered it to be rowed n"-ain, and it was further resolved that the cx-champiou of England should in conSequence of his conduct be debarred from taking part iv all races. This verdict gave general satisfaction. Tho heat was then started afresh, Hosmer, Ten Eyck, and Priddy being the contestants. One of tho grandest displays of sculling ever seen was the result. The three got away to a good start, and Hosmer .oon took the lead. He, however, was hotly pressed by Ten Eyck, who was only about a length or a length and a-lialf iv tho rear. For the entire distance of three miles tho race progressed in thin exciting stylo, Ten Eyck, repeatedly spurting, and Hosmer endeavouring with .all his might to keep in front. Eventually .Hosmor won by a length and a-lialf in tho wondcrfull time of 20 minutes .'! second... This beats all tho records on this kind of water.
