It is rumored that, unless a guarantee bo forthcoming from the settlors, Dr Denton will in all probability leave this district. The worthy doctor has discovered that the Wairoa is a particularly healthy district, and a remunerative practice is therefore impossible. AVhilo we cannot but regret Dr Denton's probable departure, we must congratulate ourselves on tbe fact that Wairoa, with its thousand inhabitants, is about the healthiest place in all New Zealand.
Mr Light, owner of the s.s. Maori, has purchased from Messrs T. and AY. Torr the steam launch Echo, lately employed as upriver tender to the p.s. Manaia.
In tho R.M. Court on Thursday Captain Preece hoard five criminal cases—Sargisson v. Hutchings, larceny of fowls ; no felonious I intent, and caso dismissed.—Police v. H. Flint, breach of Licensing Act, supplying drink on Sunday to other than a lodger ; first offence, and house well conducted; fined £1 and costs.—William King v. Rcwi Kohoa, assault and battery; fined £2 and costs, or 14 days' hard labor.—Mantcll v. Brucr, assault; case dismissed. Two natives were summoned for failing to register their dogs;' one was fined ss, and expenses £1, and tho other £1 and 18s costs. In civil cases claims to the amount of £74 lis were struck out through the non-appear-ance of tho litigants. Judgment for plaintiff was entered up to tho extent of £71 10s 9id. St." Peter's Catholic Church fancy fair is to bo held on the 31th of January. The funds will bo devoted to paying off the debt on tho church. December 3. Last Sunday night Mr Large, one of the churchwardens -in St. Paul's Church,- read the customary notice to the congregation stilting .that Mr R. Peuty, lay reader, had applied to' the Bishop of AVaiapu to be ordained a deacon in January next.
There is a Maori Haka troupe going to perform in Mayo's Hall on Saturday night. A bazaar is to be held at Mohaka on Boxing Day in aid of St. George's Church building fund.
