THE RETURNING COMET.
(From tho Hartford (Connecticut) AVcekly Times.)
Boston, 24th September.—From the observations at tho Harvard College observatory of tho returning comet of 1812, it appears to have experienced an extraordinary outburst of light Avithin tho last 24 hours, amounting, according to Mr Chandler's estimates, to an increase of six or eight times its proA'ious brilliancy. Tho general aspect of the comet also has entirely changed. From a diffuse nebulosity Avith a faint nucleus, it has suddenly becomo a starlike object. Both Mr Scarlo ancl Mr Chandler recognise a faint short brush of light toAvards the east, apparently indicating tho formation of a tail. The positions taken up last night fully confirm Father Searlo's hypothesis of tho identity of jfche comet with that of 1812, and there is nriow no possible doubt on tho subject. Phelps, N.Y., 24 th September.—Tho now Brooks comet is uoav demonstrated to bo the Hong expected comet of 1812. Professor
Brook's observations sho ay a remarkable increase in tho brilliancy of the comet since its discovery. It is noAV visible in good telescopes of moderate aperture near the stir Eta Draconis. It is rapidly approaching the earth and sun.
