A NEW RACE.
The richest stake ever competed for on tho turf, a prize of £10,000, a mile and a quarter, weight for age, is announced to be run for in July, 188G, at SandoAvn Park. The date is distant, but that is part of the scheme, for the directors propose that foals shall be entered, and they may be scratched at different times on payment of increasing forfeits. The entries are to close on December 11, and if struck out by the first Tuesday in February next year, the animal can be freed by the owner paying £10. If left in till the date fixed for the race, the fees will amount to £110, and a little investigation will show that the offer of the £10,000, with £500 for the second, and freedom from payment for tho third, does not constitute so generous an offer as at first sight appears. There are to be 300 entries, or tho race will be void. Thus if tho 300 entries arc made, and only half the possible liability of £110, that is £55, is paid by each competitor, the receipts would be £10,500, Avhich Avould leave a very comfortable balance for the Sandown Park Company. This is over-estimating the probable receipts ; but reducing them still more, and supposing that a considerable proportion of oAvncrs strike out their entries in the course of ISB4, which they can do for 30 guineas, the margin remaining is large. Practically, as it has been pointed out, the Company bet owners £10,000 to £LlO against their animals, providing them, however, Avith a means of escape Avhich avus not at the disposal of speculators avlio made "yearling books" and laid owners 100 to 1 to £100 against their Derby nomination. Nevertheless, a £10,000 prize is given and can be avou at a risk of £110.
