AVo notice that Mr J. Wilson Craig is exhibiting a copy of the presentation plate of tho London Art Union for 1884, which every subscriber of a guinea receives. This Association has done much, during its forty-seven years of existence, to encourage art productions by popularising really good pictures by eminent artists, many of Avhich havo been of historic and therefore lasting interest. The plate noAV on vieAV is called "Tho Tuileries," and is from a painting by Mr Alfred Elmore, R.A., exhibited in the Academy in 1860, shoAving tbe Queen Marie Antoinette insulted by the crowd of sans-culottes on the 20th June, 1792. In this picture Mr Elmore has vigorously epitomised tho AA'hole French revolution. The leading figures of the mob aro finely distinguished. Foremost leaning OA'er tho table is an old ophthalmic hag Avith a horrible grin and skinny brown arms, avlio snaps her fingers at the group. Then tho thoughtful pitying gild of a better class is seen. Then thero is the horrid old man Avhose mocking A'iolcnce a demagogue restrains. Far behind amongst scythe-blades, tricoloured flags, and weapons is an admirable Hogarthian tout.li, the great vault of a shouting stupid mouth, tho only part of the face except the tip of the nose that is visible. But tho croAvn of tho Avholo is Avhat it should bo, the face of Marie Antoinette, Avhich, Avithout being theatrical, is instinct with noblo dignify, and the prido of centuries of crowned ancestors —not defiant, or Boadiooan, or proud, but tranquilly immoA'able and queenly. It Avould bo difficult to quote an}' picture in AA'hich the several characteristics of a sceno aro more distinctly individualised and strongly marked than in this composition. Mr Craig, as local agent, receives subscribers' names.
