The case Fellowcs v. Hamilton, for £300 damages for alleged malpractice, Avas still proceeding AA'hen we Avent to press. Dr. Do Lisle's examination occupied a considerable portion of the morning, and Dr. Todd Avas also examined at some length. Tho caso will probably occupy tho Avhole of to-day's sitting.

A collision occurred on the Waitangi bridge last ovoning between a cart and a buggy, by Avhich the latter had its axle so bent as to compel its driver to return to Clive for repairs. A daylight parade of the Artillery and Rifle Volunteer companies Avas held at 5.30 a.m. to-day. There were forty members of each company present. The cricket match between the Napier and Petane Clubs, that was announced to take place on Saturday last, but postponed in consequence of the inclemency of the weather, Avill come off ou Saturday next at the recreation ground. Wickets -will bo pitched at 1.45 p.m. The names of the players are the same as those stated hi a previous issue.

It speaks highly of tho administration of the HaAvke's Bay County affairs, and of the satisfaction of the representatives of tho ratepayers with Mr Sutton's conduct of business, that, with tho exception of ono year out of office, Mr Sutton has been tho chairman of tho Council sinco 1877. Mr Sutton was again unanimously ro-electod to that position at tho annual meeting of tho Council to-day.

Thero was considerable amusement caused in the Supreme Court this morning by one of the Avitnesses in the case Fellowes V. Hamilton. Dr Faulknor, on being sworn, gravely informed His Honor thathewishedto lie regarded as an unprejudiced witness. On this there Avas an audible titter all round the Court. His Honor, who had also joined in the merriment produced, said ho presumed that all witnesses who came into Court to give evidence Avere to be considered as unprejudiced, and were to give their sworn testimony according to tho best of thoir ability. Dr Faulknor added, amidst another laugh, that at all events he had nothing to gain by the action, after which his evidence Avas proceeded with.

The Napier School Committee held their ordinary meeting last night. PresentMessrs Laws (chairman), Spriggs, and Williams. A letter Avas read from the Education Board granting a scholarship to Oscar Alpors, tenablo for one year. Tho head master's proposed allotment of prizes was approved, and Messrs Williams and Spriggs were appointed to act in conjunction with tho headmaster in purchasingtheprizes. Mr J. S. Large's special prize for the best kept exorciso book was awarded to Miss Isabella Morrison, special mention being also made of the exercise books submitted hy Miss Lily Dinwiddie, Miss Rachel G. LeQuesno, and Ernest Leslie. A letter was read from tho road overseer, complaining that the bad condition of the spouting of the infant school occasioned damage to tho pathway. It was decided to repair tho spouting. A cordial vote of thanks Avas passed to Mr J. S. Large for his untiling energy and perseverance in connection Avith the erection of the gymnasium. The committco then adjourned.

The examination of, and distribution of prizes to, the pupils at the NatiA'o .GirlsV School took place this morning. The schools room Avas prettily decorated for tho occasion. Tlie different classes were examined in reading, geography, singing, etc. Before presenting the prizes the Rev. Do Berdt Hovell made a few appropriate romarks, and expressed tho pleasure ho experienced in taking part in such an interesting proceeding, at the same timo complimenting hoth tlie teachers and pupils on the result of the examination. Prizes were awarded as follows:—Standard IV—lst, Margaret Poarcc; 2nd, Nellie Andrews. Standard III —Ist, Jane Taurewa ; 2nd, Katero Ngawhira. Stawlnrd ll—lst, Annie Kairoiroi; 2nd, Roka Tukotahi. For houscAvork, Jvatcrc Ngawhira. Needlework—lst, Bessie Pahewa; 2nd, Maud Manhata. Cookery, Bessie Pahewa and Mary Ranginia. Scriptures, Margaret Pcarce and Evelyn Prentice. Conduct, Maggie Ranginia. Tho visitors, who Avero fairly numerous, all expressed themselves much pleased with the school and the domestic arrangements.

This swindle has been a favorito in Mcl« bourne for some months.

Mr M'Elhone has lately been the principal figure in tho New South Wales Assembly, in scenes Avhich do not reflect much credit on the Colonial Parliament. Tho other evening, in replying to tho Minister of Mines, who had compared him to a blow-fly that did not touch anything unless it stank, Mr M'Elhone expatiated on the efforts ho had made to smash up the Parkes party, and declared that but for him tho present Government would not havo been in poAver, yet' uoav they Avere sneaking out of an undertaking to pay him his East Sydney election expenses. He Avas interrupted by Mr Dibbs, the Colonial Treasurer, Avith the observation, "You proved yourself a liar on the floor of the House," Avhereupon ho retorted, '■' that ho had never been guilty of forging a certificate, or of abstracting a public document and not replacing it." Further recriminations Avero cut short by by calls to order. Sir John Robertson Avould seem to kavc relished tho proceedings. Tho report shows that ho frequently interjected the remark, " When rogues fall out.'

It has just transpired that four artisans recently found nearly £4.000 concealed near

the hank of the Grand Canal, Dublin. It was contained in a leather bag, Avhich Avas brought to light by a dog tugging at the string -which was attached. The four, finders, after dividing the money, separated. Ono got married, and left for Australia. Another folloAvcd in his Avako, and a third has sailed for America. Tho English authorities are being puzzled over counterfeit sovereigns, Avhich are being circulated far and wide. It is .stated that In Great Britain at least 20,000 spurious sovereigns aro in circulation. They arc supposed to bo manufactured in America, and arc pronounced by experts to be of such a show and quality as to deceive almost the most practised hand. Moreover, it is found that the coating of gold is very deep, each sovereign having on it 7s 0d worth of gold, and defy tho ordinary chemical test. Perhaps some of these may find their Avay to tho colonies.
