THE GOVERNMENT AND THE CORPORATION.
Tho following correspondence is published for general information: — Napier, 17th November, 1883. Sir, —I have the honor to forward for yonr information a copy of the report of a public meeting hold in the Council Chamber of this town on the 15th instant, together Avith copies of resolutions passed thereat. I may explain that the meeting was called to consider the action of the Government toAvard.s the borough and the Municipal Council in directing Mr Baker tho Chief Surveyor of this district, to serve a legal notice of ejectment on the Toavu Clerk from the rooms now occupied as municipal ofHcss. The points to which I Avould more especially solicit your attention arc—lst. That, as ■*• AA'ill bo evident from a, perusal of the accompanying copies of letters, tho rooms were made over by tho Superintendent of the province to tho then Mayor of Napier before tho Abolition of Provinces Act was passed, and Avero in actual possession of the Municipal Council at the time of the xiassago of the Act. 2nd. That in September, 1882, tho Hon. Mr Dick did, in the presence of the !Mayor and Council, gh-c bis Avord that tho Council should not be disturbed in their occupancy of the rooms for somo years, and did at the same time giA'e permission- to erect a fire-proof room for the safe custody of their documents. 3rd. That tho request of the Council is not for permanent occupation of the rooms, but merely until such time as their financial position Avill enable them to erect offices for their oaa-ii use.
