From 3lr Kraeft, pilot, applying for leave of absence for a fortnight, en the ground of ill-health. He pointed out that ho had been pilot since 1 SOU, and had not during that time been olf duty 21 hours.—• The Board granted leave for three weeks. From 3ft Kraeft, reporting the depth of water on the bar to be 13ft tit high- water slack. WIIAP-E LIGHTS. Tho Engineer presented a report, recommending the erection of two gas-lamps on the breastwork. Somo discussion ensued as to whether it would bo cheaper to contract with the Gas Company for keeping the lamps alight, or to pay by meter. The report was eventually adopted. FINANCIAL POSITION OF IJOAHD. The Chairman said a statement of accounts which he had had pnmared showed that, since the beginning of the year, the receipts had been £11,717, including £1710 brought forward, and £2000 trainferred from loan account. Thero was now a total balance, including loan, of .C3GSI, from which would have to be deducted, the amounts passed for payment that day, which would leave about £2137. An estimate of receipts and expenditure to April next showed an anticipated revenue of £1150, so that in April next tho Board would have a balance of £2783. DREDGING. Somo discussion ensued as to whether it was necessary to keep the dredge going on account of the great, expense incurred. The Chairman gave it as his opinion, after a careful study of the matter, that unless the dredge was kept going vessels would not be able to lie alongside the breastwork very soon. As fast as the silt was removed it filled up again. The Engineer said ho had watched to see if any silt found its way back, and he had come to the conclusion that it did not. AVhen the water was still, the emptying of the silt caused the bottom to shallow so much that the punts had to discharge further out. After some further discussion it was decided that the engineer should make further observations aud report the result. It was also understood that he should visit the AVhare-o-maranui reserve to see what effect the alteration in the course of the river would be likely to have. _ I .iaiujoj. at i;r.ui-T. ! I 3lr 11. He said that 3 as 'Mr Goodall had been so eminently suc--1 cessful at Timaru it was the strongest reason for his engagement, for tho Napier works. _ The shingio'difiieulfy was also much greater at Timaru than at Napier. ' Mr Williams said there was no doubt about the Timaru breakwater being a great ' success, iro bad visited the place twice during it.-, construction. Tho breakwater was now 1100 foot long, and vessels oi a •thousand tons loaded and unloaded at ii in the heaviest sea. 1 Tho motion was supported by Mr J.
