At the monthly meeting of the local School Committee on the Gth instant the chairman stated that, according to the regulations of the "Hawke's Bay Education Board, if they had a Avorking average attendance of "one hundred children, they could ask for the services of a master in addition to the present stall. Tho Inspector's report on the school has been published, and it may, on the whole, be considered satisfactory' to all concerned. Fifty-six pupils were presented, and of these ten failed—two in Standard IV., and from each in Standards If. and ILL Willi the. exception of Standard Iff. the; school passeel a, good examination in arithmetic. Writing is a weak point in the lower standards, as also "rcadintr" in Standards 1., 11., and IV. This latter standard did avcll in geogra.phv, history, and grammar. MiHill e-oncludcs : —Mrs Gosnell lias striven hard to prepare the pupils in four different Standards, and, thouirh she has not been quite successful, much credit is due to her for the earnestness and intelligence she displays in carrying out her duties." This is only fair to '"Mrs Gosnell, and, seeing the little suppovt she receives in her work from the parents of children, it must be confessed that she brought them on well. Failure in "neatness," "moral tone," and "discipline " may avcll be attributed to tho parents, Avho'in the majority of cases have but little influence over their children, and sometimes merely send thorn to school just to be rid of them. If the generality of parents recognised fully the advantages of a good education, anel helped- the little ones with their lessems, instead of grumbling at the "teae.'her," the result Avould be still more satisfactory. Mrs Gosnell may honestly feel proud of the Avork done during the past year. As I preetictcd in a recent letter, tho Governor has duly proclaimed the Clyde township as a Town District, five Commissioners to form the Board. The election is to take place on tho 20th instant, and the first meeting on December 3rd. The late bad weather has been instrumental in conveying away a great deal of the bank of the river from " Spooner's " Point to Napier street, The question of conserving the bank is one that will shortly engage the attention of the Clyde Town Board. Mr George Mayo's auction sales on the 30th of October and 7th instant were well attended, and good prices were realised for most of the articles offered. The next sale is one that Avill command a large attendance and spirited bidding, namely, the sale of the late T. McAniuiama's land and live stock. The first sale of land in the Ruakiturc block is to bo held in Napier on the 17th January, 1881. A supplementary examination of the pupils of the AVairoa district school in Standard V. Avas hold on Thursday last, the "Rev. Mr Riddle acting as ".supervisor" of the proceedings. The result, Avhcn appended to tho Inspector's report, will complete that document.
