HAWKE'S BAY PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.

This Society held their Ordinary Mouthly Meeting last night,—being also their last for this Season. There avcix- not many Members present, no eloubt owing to the state of the Avoather, which was simply bad. We Avero pleased however to sco a few ladies there. Tho V. President Dr Spencer, occupied tho chair. The Hon. Secretary gave, in brief, the heads o£ his long M.S. on .Botany,—or, a. description of several m-.v indigenous plants lately discovered by him ; the whole paper being taken as read. Among thorn wore a few flowering plants and Ferns, and a largo number of the smaller Cryptogams. Copious specimens of most of those plants wero also exhibited ; some of the smaller ones in particular, mounted on cardboard, were beautiful and envious. Perhaps the prime one of the lot (at all events, the biggest,) avus his new species of Fagus— F. Apicnlata. Fine specimens of little-known and rave ferns, from both N. and S., from Mr Winked - manns herbarium, also from Mr Hamilton's, —and from Mr Enys of Christchurch, anel Mr Norton of Taupo, were also shown. The state of the Aveathcr precluded the Hon. Secretary bringing to the meeting a epiantity of specimens of curious, new, and little-known Insects, and other small animals, iv glass and spirits,—which he had collected during the pant year, and purposely put up for this occasion. We must not omit to mention, that some fine specimens of foreign shells anil a valuable and beautiful specimen of Madrepore Avere also on the table, —the property of Mrs Caulfon Votes of thanks to Mr Colenso, and tho Chairman Dr. Spencer, concluded the procccelings.
