The homeward mails via Suez and Biindisi, dated Melbourne, October 11, were delivered here to-day. Edward Maddison, Chatcrer and Co. (?■), bankers, of Lombard street have become insolvent. The liabilities are set down at £200,000. November 10. At the Gm-dhnll banquet last evening (tho Lord Mayor's Day) M Wadding-ton the French Minister avlio avus present, said that ho had been charged with the mission of promoting an entente eordiale between France and England. Ho strenuously denied that his Government Avere desirous of pursuing an aggressive colonial policy, or of making war for the acquisition of territory in any part of the Avorld. Mr Gladstone, in tho course of his speech, Avaimly sympathised Avith Franco in the Madagascar incident. He confirmed M. AVaddington's declaration that nothing had occurred to mar the cordiality of the relations between tho two countries, and added that the French Government had made
satisfactoiy reparation for the treatment to Avhich the Rev. Air Shaw had been subjected Avithout solicitation by the English Government. The Premier stated that the stay of the British troops in Egypt depended on tho progress which Avas made in tho task England had undertaken in that country. He added, lioAvovcr, that a partial withdrawal, enabling the evacuation of Cairo by the British force noAV in occupation, had already been ordered. AVith regard to the aspect of Continental politics Mr Gladstone declared that the Powers were unanimous in desiring the preservation of peace. The Comte De Lesseps, who Avas also among the
guests, said that ho had come to England to confer Avith the representatives of British shipowners regarding the projected second Suez canal, and that he hoped to bo able to satisfy a", reasonable claims that might be made.
The cargo of frozen beef and mutton, per steamship Orient from Sydney (left September 8), has arrived in good condition. The first portion of the mutton Avas placed on the market to-day, and real-sed 4-i-d. to od per pound.
