Tho Council mot in tho Council Chambers on AVednesday, 31st ult. Present: The Chairman, and Messrs Duff, Couper, Moloney, and Cairoll. CORRESPONDENCE. From Public AVorks Department, AVellington, re grant under Roads and Bridges Act—Resolved to make the Waihua- bridge and other bridges and culverts on the Waihua-Mohaka road a first charge on grant. From the clerk, suggesting the adoption Of a Cook County by-law re pigs and goats trespassing on roads.—Consideration held over. From clerk, reporting* tho receipt of £454 9s Gd in rates. From Public Works Department, agreeing* to extra vote of £9 for Awatcra bridge, £105. From Mv J. Powdrell, consenting to an exchange of road lines at the Huramua creek.—Resolved to close the old lino and open tho new one, as agreed to by Mr rowdrell. From the Commissioner Property Tax Department, re additions to valuation roll. From tho Road Overseer, covering the usual road reports. From tho Otago Daily Times Company re the proposed publication of New Zealand Statutes in consolidated form. w From F. Lambert and T. Powdrell re 'erection and removal of certain gates on roads. —Agreed to. AVANTED A BILLET. Mr T. Hallett (Meanee; forwarded an application for tho billet of road overseer, at present hold by AEr R. Gardiner. Ho asked "what salary tho Council paid to tho road overseer," and ventured the remark " that probably a slight advance upon the salary paid to a road overseer Avould secure the services of a man competent to do the work of both overseer and engineer. Of course you Avould not get the services of a certificated engineer without giving a, pretty good salary. Though not, a C.E., I could, like Air Kennedy, undertake any Buch works as your Council would require." The Chairman stated he had instructed the clerk to reply that until Air Couper's notice of motion Avas passed there would be no vacancy on the Council staff. cr. courer's motion. Tho notice of motion given by Cr. Couper at last meeting to invito tenders for the posts of clerk and overseer avus withdrawn. MAIL TO GISBORNE VIA TE REINOA. Cr. Moloney proposed, and Cr. Cuff seconded, " That this Council represent to tho Government the desirability of establishing a Avcekly mail between AVairoa and Gisborne. and that tho Cook County Council bo asked to endorse tho same."— Carried. VACANCY IN REPRESENTATION OF MOHAKA. The clerk repotted a A-acmey in the representation of tho Mohaka riding caused by tho bankruptcy of AEr Hugh McLean. Resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, y seconded by Cr. Moloney, "That the returning officer for Mohaka be informed that Mr McLean's oilice as councillor has been declared vacant." SALE OE RUAKITURE. Proposed by Cr. Moloney, and seconded by Cr. Couper, "That tho Government bo requested to placo tho Ruakituro block in tho market at an early date, and that this Council recommend the sale to be held at Wairoa.'' —Carried. Tho rest of tho business was uir'-iiportant.
