FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' FETE.
The Friendly Societies of the district of ILiwkc's Bay celebrated their sixth annual fete yesterday at the recreation ground in Ciirlyle street. Notwithstanding the numerous other attractions there was a very largo attendance of spectators, who appeared to spend an enjoyable day, the weather k-in" almost perfect for a holiday. The member* of the different societies formL-α in procession at the Foresters Hall, Dickens street, at 11.30 a.m., and consisted of tho Orders of Oddfellows, Protestant Alliance, Hibernians, Loyal Lmtcd .Friends, and Foresters, each being headed by their respective banners and the members wearing their regalia. Tho line of route taken by the procession was through Dickens street, Hastings and Rafiles streets, to tho Marine Parade, back to Hastings fh-cet, and thence to the recreation ground. The Waipawa brass band supplied the music for the profession, and made a vt-rv creditable appearance. On arrival at " the ground tho programme was proceeded with, and gave every satisfaction by tin manner m which it was ean-iud out, there being quite an absence of the tedious delays between the events that appear to be almost inseparable from sports of this description. Some of the races were very eloselv contested, especially tho Napier Handicap/which of course created the most interest, and the ground was in capital order. The judges were Messrs Poole and E. Laws, Mr and Mr D.Murnaiie being referee and starter respectively, and all concerned evidently did their utmost to render the affair a success. The grand stand was extensively patronised throughout, the day, and tho grand stand bar under Mr .Ryan's proprietorship appeared to be doing a flourishing business. The Waipawa brass band played at intervals during the proceedings, and really, considering that it was their first ilected no small credit on their indefatigable bandmaster. Mr Joseph Chicken, by the manner in which they acquitted themselves. The only disturbance that, occurred during tho day "was caused by an individual who had been patronising , the bar too freely, and who conducted himself in a most violent manner before being secured by tho police.
