MORE ABOUT TIGHT LACING.
The writer of "A. Woman's Letter lo Women" iv tho Liverpool Mercury discloses some startling facts in connection with the pernicious habit of tight-lacing. Sho mentions a case where a woman went to a dentist to have some teeth extracted, and as the operation would be painful she consented to tho administration of antesthetics. The dentist asked her to sec that her dress was quite loose and easy m every part, as otherwise there would be danger connected with the business. Sho declared that everything was quite right, and the operation was gone on with, but, to the horror of the dentist, tho lady died under it. Upon examination it was found that under her corset a steel band was fastened with a screw (intended to reduce the size of the waist), which prevented the free action of tho vital organs, and death was tho result. An instance is given ot a mother who, in order to reducc_ the size ot her daughters' waists, "found it necessary for them to wear their corsets at night. For a Ion" time the mother laced them closo but she found out that her daughters cut tlio cords, and she had to whip them soundly. Another mother, who experienced the same difficulty, tied her daughters' hands iv front with silk handkerchiefs. _ A third person put a chain about the waist, padlocked the chain, and put the key in her pocket. This, she insisted, was an effectual way to prevent her daughters tampering with their tight-laced corsets at night—a matter of great importance, as tho swelling at night spoiled the work of the day! Theselnstauces aro vouched for as true, and the writer says she " blushes for her sex.
