COTTAGE BURNED.—CIRCUMSTANCES SUSPICIOUS.

Dunedin, This day,

A four-roomed cottage at Mary Hill, Moniington, belonging to Jeremiah Gathous was burned down yesterday. It seems that about 9 o'clock the place was discovered to be on fire by one Andrew Millar, who was working close by. Millar states that, seeing smoke issuing through the door, he ran over to the place and found a quantity of paper and straw underneath a sofa on fire, and that ho apparently succeeded in effectually extinguishing it. Mrs Gathous was at home at the time, but her husband was away at his work. About an hour afterwards the house was discovered in flames, and was burnt to the ground. The place was insured in the South British office for £150, and tho furniture for £50. The circumstances of the fire being of a suspicious nature tho police are enquiring into them.
