The visit of tho Premier to Auckland was taken advantage of by tho local representative men to urge upon him the desirability of pushing on the North Island main trunk railway. Auckland, said the deputation to the Premier, viewed with apprehension the delay that had taken place in the surveys of the different routes. Auckland did not sco thero was any cause for these delays, as in its opinion there could bo but one route. Auckland must be united with New Plymouth ; Auckland desired it, New Plymouth yearned for it; the Maoris wero eager to render every assistance. It was the only route that could pay, becauso it was the only route that Auckland wanted for tho extension of tho railway. A native chief, To Weterc, was included in the deputation to say what, we suppose, he Was told to say, and this he said to tho satisfaction of his hosts. The Premier's'reply was guarded. As an old Taranaki settlor ho was aware that the feeling there was exa oecdingly strong, quito as strong as "it was in Auckland, for communication with Auckland. The duty of tho Government was quite clear. Their intention was to havo tho country thoroughly explored, and then to make such recommendations to the Houso as they considered would commend themselves to its judgment, bearing in mind tho general interests and the'advantages which would bo derived from less expenditure, more land, and better communication between the various ccntros of population.
