LONDON. October 20. The homeward mails via San Francisco, from Auckland on September 11th, were delivered here to-day. Sir Evelyn AA r ood, Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Army, sailed for Alexandria to-day. Telegrams to hand from Gibraltar report that four sharp shocks of earthquake have been experienced there. No damage has been done to the British fortifications or the town. The latest intelligence from Madagascar states that the parleying which has been proceeding between Admiral Galiber and the representatives of the native queen is now at a standstill, the latter evincing no desire to conic to term 3on the basis proposed by the French Admiral. A general exodus from Tamatavc has taken place, and it is feared that tho bombardment of the town may be renewed by tho French,
Dr. Benson, Archbishop of Canterbury, underwent a surgical operation to-day, the complete recovery of His Lordship is expected.
