NAPIER HARBOR BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last afternoon. Present : Messrs J. D. Ormond (chairman), P. Dolbel, J. W. Neal, W. C. Smith, M.H.R.. J. A. Smith, J. H. Vautier, the Hon. J. N. Wilson, and His Worship the Mayor. COEKESrONDENCE. TliG following inward correspondence •was road : — From the Marine Department, stating that it was not intended to remove the Bluff light at presont. From the same, stating that the department was quite unable at present to suggest any mode by which Harbor Boards could limit their liability, in .such cases as that of Williams v. the Queen.
Prom Mr Goodall, forwarding plans, rcjLport, &c, of the Timaru breakwater. —Consideration postponed until next meeting. From the Harbor-master, reporting- that the depth of water on thu bnr at high water slack was 12 feet 6 inches.
From tho Napier Municipal Council, to join with the Board in erecting gas lamps at tho Spit.—Tho secretary was directed to report as to arrangements for fixing samo, and the cost of limps and supply of gas. From Mr Thomas ITallett, asking whether tho Board would receive designs for a harbor. —Consideration deferred.
The engineer reported as follows re Mill. Harvey's claim for compensation for personal injury :—"I have enquired into this matter, and find that on the Ist Scptomber Captain Bell, of tho schooner Enterprise, was shipping sleepers that had been brought down in railway trucks. Ten of tho sleopers ho condemned, and as it was lato on Saturday evening, and as tho trucks •would not be shifted until the Monday, he stacked tho condemned sleepers carefully alongside a loaded truck on the part of tho ■wharf where goods arc deposited when landed or awaiting shipment, fully 40 feet of roadway and the space between the railway lino and the edge of tho quay being clear. On tho following evening the applicant appears to have been walking along the part the wharf whore cargo is placed, instead of in tho open road, and thus struck his leg against tho sleepers. I have seen the Board's solicitor, who states that there is no liability on the part of the Board."— It was decided that Mr Harvey be written to that his claim for compensation could not be entertained. r KIBCEMiANKOTJS. It was decided, after some little dis(jussion, that a meeting of the Board shall
bo held as soon as the harbor designs are received back from England for the purpose of examining or otherwiso dealing with The Chairman said the debit balance to tho Board's account at the bank was £11 9s lid, but as this was the busy time of the year there would be enough coming in for current expenses. Tho amount on fixed deposit was now £3000, there having been £2000 withdrawn to remit Home for interest on tho Board's debentures.
Accounts amounting to £279 10s Id were passed for payment. The Board "then adjourned.
